Job Responsibilities

The Health Educator will implement evidence-based policy, systems, and environmental approaches to improve health in early care and education programs, support the integration of nutrition, physical activity, and wellness strategies within ABC Quality and across the Division of Early Care and Education to impact child care facilities across the state. Incumbent will promote and support best practice recommendations for nutrition, physical activity and wellness policies through training and technical assistance to child care programs to improve the environment and health of children. THIS POSITION WILL SERVICE THE LOW COUNTRY.

Coordinate with professionals both within and outside the agency serving child care programs to assure implementation of developmentally appropriate strategies and non-duplication of services; serve as source for resources, information and content expertise; establish and support partnerships on best practices.

Provide technical assistance on nutrition, physical activity, and wellness policies through site visits, e-mail or phone calls to child care programs; assist child care providers to promote healthy practices to parents, and the community; serve as resource to assigned child care programs to promote environmental changes to improve health, answer questions, develop strategies, make connections to local resources and for other program-initiated needs.

Conduct desk reviews of child care provider submitted portfolios for annual assessments as assigned.

Develop and deliver state, regional and local level training to child care providers on ABC Quality best practices for nutrition, physical activity and wellness.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in health education, public health, early childhood education, health promotion or a closely related field that confers CHES eligibility and two (2) years of health education experience.

A Master's degree in one of the above and one (1) year of health education experience.

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience as approved by the Division of State Human Resources.

Preference will be given to candidates clearly documenting prior experience providing training and technical assistance to early care and education providers, history of developing and maintaining effective working relationships with representatives from organizations and government agencies involved in obesity prevention and wellness efforts, strong verbal and written communication skills, and strong computer competencies, including Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel.

Must possess a valid SC driver's license and satisfactory driving record as position requires travel throughout the state. Position may require travel and work after hours and on weekends as needed. Employee may be required to drive personal vehicle while performing the duties of this position.
