Welcome to our Spring StarTech Cohort

We are excited to be offering our Spring StarTech cohort at Trident Health starting on Monday March 15th. This program is designed for new CNAs with no experience, individuals that currently have patient care experience but not in an acute (hospital) setting, or those who don't have patient care experience but are interested in healthcare.

The StarTech Program is designed for those who strive to work on Medical/Surgical Nursing Units in the hospital setting.

This is a paid training program and you are hired directly by the facility and will be a Full-Time employee. Shift is based on availability on the unit and can be days, nights, or mixed. All shifts will required rotating weekends. Hours are 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM OR 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM.

We have openings on our Medical-Surgical, Progressive Care, Telemetry, Neuro, and Oncology units.

The program is comprised of didactic training, skills training and clinical preceptorship at the sponsoring facility.

The program will orient individuals to the facility in which they will be working, but also better prepare them for standard patient care assignments in an acute care setting upon successful completion of the 5-week program.

The first three (3) weeks include a combination of didactic education and skills training. Learners will get Basic Life Support (BLS) and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certified during this time.

The remaining two (2) weeks are spent at the sponsoring facility working with a “Patient Care Techs” and supervised by a Registered Nurse on the unit.

The StarTech learner will work 3 - twelve hour (12hr) shifts during each week of the Clinical Preceptorship, which may include weekend shifts or night shifts, based on the preceptorship schedule and needs of the nursing unit.

The StarTech Program is based upon the standards established by the State Boards of Nursing for CNAs. Many of the division and/or facility specific training initiatives will be incorporated into the curriculum as well.

Learners will be BLS and CPI certified. Patient Care Techs will be introduced and trained on the facility Electronic Health Record.


Graduates of the StarTech fulfill the role of Patient Care Technician in our hospital. As a Patient Care Technician at the hospital, you will deliver high quality, patient-centered care by performing a variety of important patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily listing. Under supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN), you will assist the nursing staff in providing patient care with your skills and training and in accordance with the needs of our department. The Patient Care Technician will consistently assist the patient care team by maintaining a clean, well-organized and safe patient care environment.

_What you will do in this role:_

**You will obtain vital signs, height and weight, intake and output, calorie counts, application of ice/heat, and/or simple non-sterile dressing changes.

**You will answer patient call lights in a timely manner and respond to patient needs/requests.

**You will assist patients with performing activities of daily living to include bathing, shaving, oral care, toileting, grooming, changing linens, providing water, ambulation, assisting with meal delivery and feeding as directed.

**You will be responsible for safe patient handling: Turning and positioning, use of specialty beds, patient transfer and use of transfer devices, ambulation assistance and use of assistive devices, restraint alternatives, oxygen use and transport, suction use, pre-operative skin preparation and/or use of sequential compression devices (SCD).

**You will be responsible for recording information in the patient’s medical records.

**You will maintain close communication with physicians, nurses and other healthcare team members regarding changes in a patient’s care and condition.

**In conjunction with physicians and nurses, you will be responsible for educating patients and families on the care and therapies being provided.

**You will monitor supplies levels in your unit and patient rooms and restock as needed.

*Requirements to be considered for the Star Tech Program:*

**Program acceptance requires a one (1) year, full-time commitment to the sponsoring facility. If a PCT chooses to leave the facility before the 1-year commitment is fulfilled, they will be required to meet a pro-rated monetary responsibility.

**High School Diploma or equivalent is required; 18 years of age or old is required.

**You must not have current or prior experience working as an acute care hospital.

**You must be flexible to work day or night shift (unit needs vary)

**Attendance is imperative and 100% mandatory throughout the 5-week training program.
