As the company's second line of defense, Corporate Risk — or Independent Risk Management — provides independent oversight of risk-taking activities. Independent Risk Management establishes and maintains Wells Fargo's risk management program and provides oversight, including challenges to and independent assessment of, the frontline's execution of its risk management responsibilities. We manage risk according to the Risk Management Framework (https://portal.teamworks.wellsfargo.net/rc/CorporateRisk/Pages/riskmgmtfrmwk.aspx) and ensure all employees understand their individual accountability for managing risk.

The Operations Oversight Individual Contributor Leads are responsible for performing oversight of the Global Operations function within the Wells Fargo Chief Operating Office (COO).

These roles oversee and challenge the front line across all operational risk routines, including: plan, identify and assess, control and mitigate, monitor and report, test and validate; escalating issues and concerns to appropriate decision-making body. The roles also continuously review and challenges the alignment of risk management results and expected functional outcomes

This role will serve as the key point of contact for Independent Risk Management and Front Line COO Leadership and Control Executive leaders for all matters pertaining to oversight of the noted COO organization.

The primary responsibilities of this role follow:

  • Use subject matter expertise and industry knowledge to provide independent oversight and credible challenge to the Line of Business's operational risk management activities

  • Active engagement in key front line governance routines inclusive of strategic planning sessions, governance committees and business reviews

  • Provide perspective for Independent Risk Assessment of the COO, and present results to front line executives

  • Review and challenge risk acceptances, issue remediation, losses, testing deferrals and front line metrics

  • Identify and escalate to senior leadership conflicts with risk management results and expected business outcomes

  • Active, routine engagement with senior Independent Risk Management leaders to ensure information sharing across Risk Types

  • Develop and deliver content to senior business, Independent Risk, Internal Audit and regulatory leaders summarizing the key operational risks generated by the respective organizations

  • Manage consistent and recurring communications with regulators and audit, increasing transparency, buy in, and building credibility

  • Direct engagement with the Control Executive teams, Business Heads and Independent Risk leaders to promote a strong operational risk culture

  • Evaluate cross-program and cross-group analytics to identify opportunities and best practices to influence stronger risk management practices by the business

Selected candidate will be required to work within one of the following Wells Fargo office locations: Charlotte, NC; Dallas, TX; Des Moines, IA; Minneapolis, MN; St. Louis, MO; Phoenix, AZ. New York, NY

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in risk management (includes compliance, financial crimes, operational risk, audit, legal, credit risk, market risk, IT systems security, business process management) or 10+ years of financial services industry experience, of which 7+ years must include direct experience in risk management

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Advanced Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint) skills

  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy

  • Ability to articulate complex concepts in a clear manner

  • Leadership skills including the ability to influence effectively in a matrix environment

Other Desired Qualifications

  • Expert understanding of risk management, with specific experience in components of the Chief Operating Office

  • Experience in Operations Business, Risk Management, or Risk Oversight for Operations in the financial services industry

  • Meaningful knowledge across the Enterprise Risk Management Framework to drive connectivity, including best practices

  • Experience providing risk reporting and updates to senior-level management

  • Experience navigating transformational program management activities

  • Experience communicating with regulators, auditors and other oversight bodies

  • Strong knowledge of the financial services industry, products, and regulatory environment

  • Strong interpersonal, influencing, and communications skills with an ability to interact effectively with stakeholders at all levels, and regulators, to include virtual, matrixed leadership experience and the ability to effectively manage and build relationships across lines of defense.

  • Organizational courage and willingness to make tough, informed decisions and thoughtfully share independent perspectives

  • Proven leadership skills to drive alignment across stakeholder groups to develop and deliver repeatable end-to-end risk management solutions and results.

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, coupled with an ability to translate ambiguous ideas/issues into well-defined plans/solutions with a track-record for delivering results

  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment, lead through adversity, and adjust to changing priorities

  • Flexibility and business savvy to navigate a complex, highly-matrixed organization

Job Expectations

  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time
