Job Responsibilities

INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY

Serves a crew leader and performs skilled manual labor in various duties such as the replacement of missing signs and damages signs, and the installation of new signs and straightening of existing signs according to State specifications. Operates tandem and single axle dump trucks with trailers for hauling materials and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations, and heavier equipment such as a motor grader, backhoe and specialized equipment for special projects and on-call related activities. Serves as crew leader and performs skilled manual labor in the placement of thermo pavement markings such as stop bars, arrows, crosswalks, and railroad crossings according to State specifications. Inspects roads for missing and damages signs, sign reflectivity, leaning signs and other safety hazards; picks up litter, debris, and dead animals. Assists with instructing crew members daily in safety practices, such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Sets-up traffic control according to South Carolina Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices Standards to warn motorists of road work ahead. Assists in producing daily record of work performed and materials used, records such as Highway Maintenance Management System and the maintenance requests and complaints forms. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventive maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists crew foreman with managing assigned crew(s) in emergency or inclement weather operations. May include on-call personnel for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts in emergency or inclement weather operations. May include being available for extended hours or 12-hours shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence in accordance with State Human Resources Regulations.

A valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License. (NOTE): This position requires a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of placement in the position. However, applicants without a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License will be considered if no qualified applicants with a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License are available.
