Sr Staff Accountant- Facility Start Up Special Assignment



Toindependently perform complex accounting functions which support unit orcorporate decision making onhighly complex or broad business issues.


Incumbentwill provide expertise on complex business, financial or managerial issueswithin a business unit or corporate environment.Additionally, this position will/must:

  • have theability to analyze and understand impact and have a broader perspective onspecific accounting

  • issues.This requires a comprehensive understandingof Caterpillar’s business accounting issues and full

  • supportof the unit leadership team.

  • act as ateacher on accounting issues to staff accountants as well as non accountants

  • resolveissues independently

  • leadand/or direct teams within or outside of discipline addressing complex problems

  • take fullresponsibility for outcomes

SeniorStaff Accountants are knowledgeable on a variety of accounting functions butgenerally have specialized areas ofresponsibility at this level.Incumbenthas the ability to accomplish complex and/or technical analysis, but generallyutilizes data gathered by others to render an accounting opinion or businessdecision.Incumbent will provideadvice/recommendations to business unit managers and leaders often working ontactical and strategic businessissues.

Possiblespecific areas of responsibility could include but are not limited to:

  • internalmanagement accounting, including profit center, service center, distributionservices, strategic business, integrated manufacturing, and component businessunit reporting

  • estimatingvarious forecast and budget scenarios as needed based on changing businessconditions

  • presentationand explanation of results to management

  • costaccounting / decision support including:determining Internal Rate of Return (IRR) for high complexity projects,OPACC growth strategy, quality of earnings analysis, enterprise coordinationand/or governance of costing and/or investment activities, and product groupand/or operational strategy development & execution

  • provideleadership for financial accounting - monthly legal entity reporting, inventoryaccounting, standard cost revision, and payroll and benefit accounting

  • provideleadership for intercompany reconciliation and analysis

  • developmentand maintenance of internal controls, including Sarbanes-Oxley controldocumentation

  • LegalEntity Reporting

Incumbentmust demonstrate specific accounting knowledge and independently handleaccounting issues.

Accountingtasks can be varied in areas such as:

  • Providingfinancial guidance on cross functional or business unit product teams

  • Redesigning& implementing financial systems

  • Drivebehavior (ability to influence management directions) in accordance withfinancial targets and business unit / division / enterprise strategy

  • Developingworldwide sourcing studies

  • Developingmethodology and providing education to accounting and non-accounting staffs andcross-functional teams

  • Communicating/ consulting to broader (worldwide) audience on cost accounting issues




  • Bachelor's level degree inAccounting; Non-Accounting degree requires 18 hours of core accounting coursesor approved certification (CPA/CMA)**


  • 6-8 years of Accounting experience

Desired Qualifications:


  • Professional Certification (Certified Public Accountant (CPA), CertifiedManagement Accountant (CMA) or equivalent)


  • MBA or Master’s Degree in Accounting (or equivalent)


  • 3.0 / 4.0 Grade Point Average (Account GPA & Cumulative GPA) or equivalent


  • Knowledge of Caterpillar systems and processes


  • Systems Integration experience


  • Willingness to relocate and be mobile minded


  • Excellent Initiative, Communication, Leadership and Interpersonal skills
