Perform assigned inspections, evaluations, and ambient monitoring for Environmental Affairs, Bureau of Environmental Health Services, Midlands-Columbia, as required by the Bureau of Water wastewater program. Meet the commitments of the Ambient program by sampling sites to determine compliance with State and Federal Regulations and Standards. Meets as a minimum the program commitment of sampling 100% fixed sites every month, 100% statistical sites every month and 100% of special sites twice per month. Sample 100% of wastewater facility discharge points as assigned, within the Federal calendar year (October – September). Prepare sample bottles and complete daily calibration and standardization for sampling equipment. Clean and maintain equipment to ensure it is in good working condition. Work to be conducted in strict accordance with the Environmental Affairs Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and Bureau of Water (BOW) schedule frequency. Conduct complaint investigations in accordance with SOP’s, programmatic guidance, and state/federal laws and regulations. Provide technical assistance to staff, the regulated community and public when necessary or requested. Initiate enforcement actions where appropriate. Post public notices and advisories at facilities and public locations as requested. Perform 100% of assigned wastewater compliance inspections, follow-up inspections, and general permit inspections, as needed, for compliance with applicable regulations, permits and accords to BOW frequency schedule. Complete all necessary administrative tasks and documentation as required and requested.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements:Some positions require the possession of a valid driver's license. Some positions require the successful completion of specialized courses in health physics or certification as a health physicist. A high school diploma and experience in environmental health programs or radiological health. A bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering or a related technical field may be substituted for the required work experience.
Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Excellent organizational and communication skills, make presentations in a group setting; communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written manner; work effectively in a team-oriented environment and encourage positive working relationships with coworkers, industry, and government officials; work independently in a field environment; work in all reasonable weather conditions; access non-traditional work environments; climb ladders, stoop, lift and carry up to 50 pounds; swim and work comfortably in a boat on open water and in rough weather conditions; walk on narrow catwalks that require a sense of balance; make visual observations of facilities, samples, plans, specifications, reports, etc.; visually differentiate between various shades of color; conduct field tests, using delicate instruments and chemicals, which require steady hands; to include but not limited to, safety glasses, lab coats, and nitrile or latex gloves. Must maintain a professional appearance. Must possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Occasional overnight travel may be required. This position requires the successful completion of prescribed technical coursework and passing any test relevant to the position within the probationary period or trial period. This position may require participation as a member of the Emergency Response Team, overseeing environmental clean-up, which requires 24-hour on call and response on a rotating basis. Performs other duties as required.
