SC Department of Public Safety Laboratory Technologist I in Richland County, South Carolina
This position is located at the Department of Mental Health, DIS Specialty Clinic, 8301 Farrow Road, Columbia, SC 29203.
Under general supervision of the office manager, you will function as the administrative and technical personnel testing for multiple laboratory sections (hematology, chemistry, urinalysis and Immunology, stool occult and pregnancy test). Participates in laboratory surveys, and provides consultative services. Performs such activities as acquisition of lab supplies, safety/OHSA implementation and of quality control, preventative maintenance and patient results and offers technical expertise to various clinical sections as needed.
Performs and assists in the performance of all technical procedures (moderate complexity) within the section.
Receives specimens and affirms acceptability and identification. Handles/processes specimens appropriately and in a timely manner.
Responsible for recording the results of technical procedures performed on patients specimens accurately. Assists in maintaining accurate logs.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
State Requirement: An associate degree or equivalent technical training in electronics technology, biology or the natural sciences and work experience in a laboratory environment; or a high school diploma and journey-level work experience in a laboratory environment.
Preferred Qualifications:**Thorough knowledge of principles, laboratory applications and information sources of medical technology. Working knowledge of both basic and advanced principles and procedures of all technical methods. ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathology) certification..
**The selected applicant should have the ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds (more in times of emergencies), push, pull, stand, sit, bend, stoop, reach, climb two (2) or three (3) flights of stairs, tolerate noise levels, move freely in work area, and initiate CPR and BEST if needed.
