SC Department of Public Safety Law Enforcement Officer II-Sergeant in Richland County, South Carolina

Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision, supervises a shift of Public Safety Officers who are responsible for enforcing State, County, and Municipal laws and Department policies, rules and regulations for the protection and security of juveniles, staff, visitors, and property of the S. C. Department of Juvenile Justice. Conduct routine checks and surveillance of buildings and grounds to ensure safety and security procedures are adhered to; patrols Department property; searches for and apprehends AWOLS, assists units in controlling juvenile disturbances; ensures proper notification are made to management. Supervises, assigns tasks and duties to subordinates routinely and as situations dictate; conducts staff appraisals and counsels with employees as appropriate; ensures that officers obtain required training; prepares schedules to ensure adequate coverage. Prepares, reviews, approves shift reports and other records; operates communication network and vehicles; ensures that vehicles and equipment are properly maintained; transports juveniles as deemed necessary. Investigates escapes and vehicle accidents occurring on Department property; conducts other investigations such as drugs, theft, contraband and juvenile abuse. Carry our other duties as needed in order to ensure the security, safety, and general good order for the Department. Maybe placed temporarily in charge of a shift in the absence of a supervisor. Perform other duties deemed by the Supervisor.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Requirements: A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.

Agency Requirements: High school diploma or GED and 3 years of Law Enforcement experience. Certified by the SC Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with State Law (23-23-40). Must pass drug test and background check.

*Special Necessary Requirements: *Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976. Some positions require a commercial driver's license

Must be knowledgeable of state, county, and municipal laws, rules, regulations for the protection and security of persons and property of all DJJ facili1ies. Knowledge of proper law enforcement officer behavior and role; modern law enforcement techniques and procedures; how to collect and preserve evidence; the legal rights of both suspects and law enforcement personnel; the laws one is responsible for enforcing; and the functions and interrelationships of other law enforcement agencies. Skill in the operation of law enforcement vehicles, weapons, and communications equipment; the ability to correctly evaluate situations and make good decisions; the ability to deal firmly, yet tactfully, with the general public; to effectively interview witnesses and suspects; to read and comprehend written materials; and to write clearly and effectively. Under limited supervision they will be given search assignments statewide, will report all training, searches to the Chief of Public Safety will be expected, as a Public Safety Officer, to assist in ensuring the safety and security of the agencies juveniles, staff, and visitors. Annual scheduled performance reviews will be completed. On call for emergencies 24 hours per day. Essential Position: Candidate should possess high moral, character, someone stable and nature and able to withstand a background investigation. Must be able to work with aggressive delinquent juveniles daily in accordance with SCDJJ Policies and Procedures. Must be able to lift 50+ lbs., sits 1-3 hours per day: stand 1-3 hours per day, walk 1-3 hours per day and ability to work varied hours to meet organizational needs. Deal with confidential and sensitive information. Ability to prioritize multiple competing priorities during high stress situations and ability occasionally travels overnight. This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation or recapture of juveniles within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with juveniles within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.
