Job Responsibilities

Assists supervisor in directing daily operations of truck body assembly shop and serves as lead mechanic technician for installing and maintaining dump, platform, and utility bodies on truck chassis. Installs and maintains hydraulic and electrical systems and equipment on trucks and equipment. Performs electric and gas welding and cutting to install truck bodies and make repairs to worn and broken equipment. Maintains shop equipment and builds specialty tools and equipment for shop use. Performs troubleshooting tests and repairs on electrical systems installed on trucks and heavy-equipment. Performs body and structural repairs or replacements to truck cab and chassis, service bodies, and other heavy e­quipment. Read and interprets technical manuals, charts, and parts manuals to plan work and select replacement parts. Installs two-way radios, warning lights, conspicuity tape, agency identification decals, and other required items on trucks and heavy-equipment. Acts as supervisor when supervisor is absent, assists other coworkers in various duties, trains other technicians in areas here needed and set example for others to follow. Monitors truck body assembly shop daily work activities and mentors other technicians to ensure quality standards are maintained. Assists supervisor with completing final inspections of truck body installations and repairs to ensure work quality for safe and proper operation of equipment. Performs other job-related duties as required.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Two (2) years of work experience that involved the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence in accordance with State Human Resources Regulations. Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience. Necessary Special Requirement: Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
