SC Department of Public Safety Program Assistant in Richland County, South Carolina

Job Responsibilities

SCDJJ provides work experience to youth within the secure facilities. The Work Program Assistant will assist current instructors with providing instructional services and oversight for the youth workers. This position will also act as a substitute for any work program instructor that is out and operate one work program on Saturdays. Acts as backup when any work program Instructor is on leave to operate the work program. Works closely with Education, Treatment and Security to actively recruit, interview and place appropriate juveniles in the appropriate work program. Assist Juvenile Work Programs in the normal operation and to ensure efficient and effective cohesion of work programs. Work a flexible schedule to allow one of the Juvenile Work Programs to operate on Saturdays. Assist with Juvenile Incentives Programs as needed. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A high school diploma and relevant experience pertaining to either upholstery skills or carpentry/woodworking skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Must be able to demonstrate practical applications of basic upholstery or carpentry/woodworking and have experience and knowledge in instructional practices, methods, strategies, to include workshop/classroom management based on positive reinforcement; Have good observation skills; Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the designated trade; Knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials used in the trades; Knowledge of techniques, methods, requirements and practices used in the designated trade. Maintain effective working relationships with others. Incumbent will work under limited supervision and annual scheduled performance reviews will be conducted. Must be able to be on their feet for the workday. No sedentary duties. Must be able to work around disruptive youth. Must be able to work inside of a secure juvenile facility. Able to a work a flexible schedule to include Saturdays. This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of juveniles within the jurisdiction of the department of juvenile justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with juveniles within the jurisdiction of the department of juvenile justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.

Salary: $12.98 - $24.01 Hourly
