Job Responsibilities

STATEWIDE OPERATIONS

Under general supervision, serves as a supervisor in the Community Relations and Recruiting Unit and is responsible for the oversight of all activities of the SCHP media, community relations and recruiting including the supervision of the Community Relations Officers, Recruiters and the liaison for the SC Dept. of Education. Reviews subordinates' daily and monthly reports and documentation. Prepares schedules and work assignments. Responsible for the full management and supervision in the operations of the patrol in the assigned unit.

Must demonstrate the ability to manage and supervise large group of personnel. Must have the ability to make accurate immediate complex decisions without consultation with higher level management, and have the ability to meet and deal with public officials and the general public under adverse conditions.

Must successfully complete basic and advanced PIO training. Must have good knowledge of media policies, procedures and FOIA laws. Must have ability to develop and implement traffic safety educational tools and programs.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

TIME IN GRADE – An applicant must have five (5) years of experience as a South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper and must have held the rank of SCHP Corporal for six months prior to the posted closing date of the vacancy.

EDUCATION – High school diploma or GED equivalency.

PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION – An applicant must have scored 70 or higher on a promotional examination for the vacancy rank within two years of the posted closing date of the vacancy.

PROMOTIONAL INTERVIEW PANEL– An applicant must have successfully completed a promotional interview panel for the vacancy rank within two years of the posted closing date of the vacancy.

DISCIPLINARY ACTION – Any individual who has been suspended for disciplinary reasons and/or involuntarily demoted during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the vacancy or during the subsequent selection process shall be considered ineligible to participate in the promotion process.

EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – An individual who has received an "Unsuccessful Performance" rating on the employee's most recent performance evaluation or has received a “Warning Notice of Substandard Performance” during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the vacancy shall be ineligible to participate in the promotion process.

PROBATIONARY/TRIAL PERIOD – Any individual serving a probationary/trial period shall be ineligible to participate in the promotion process.

RESIDENCY – Selected applicant must comply with the residency guidelines outlined in SCDPS Policy 300.47 (Residency Requirements for Commissioned Law Enforcement Officers) within 4 months of the effective date of the promotion/reassignment. SCDPS Policy #300.47 IV. Residency Regulations D.2. Personnel assigned to a specialized unit (MAIT, ACERT, etc.) Troopers assigned to a specialized Troop or Unit shall establish a residence within the Troop or Unit of their assigned area of responsibility or, if residing outside of the Troop or Unit of their assigned area of responsibility, at a location that will allow them to respond to the county in which their assigned Troop or Unit office is located within 45 minutes. IV.C. Troop/Region/Division/Unit Commanders are responsible for determining compliance with this policy and shall approve or deny requests to reside outside of the area of assignment.
