THIS POSITON SERVES HIGHWAY PATROL TRAINING UNIT (TROOP 11)
Under general supervision, serve as an instructor for SCHP Law Enforcement Officers at all levels to include: basic training, in-service and advanced training. Must complete required instructor certification programs and instructor recertification. Assists other divisions of DPS, the CJA and other law enforcement agencies with instruction needs as required. Employee will gain certification and maintain certification as a Firearms Instructor, Driving Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor and Basic Instructor. Employee will gain and maintain other instructor certifications as assigned. Provides supervision of Patrol Basic Trainees - Provide proper mentoring, counseling, discipline and guidance to Highway Patrol Trainees during Basic Highway Patrol training. Employee will ensure that Basic Trainees are equipped with proper uniforms and equipment on a daily basis. Employee will serve as Staff Duty Officer (Cadre) during the time that Basic Trainees are on campus. Employee will participate in physical training with Patrol Trainees and will lead the PT sessions when needed.
Must be certified as a basic firearms, driving, and defensive tactics instructor or obtain these certifications within a prescribed time frame. The employee should have the ability to deal firmly but courteously with the general public and the ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations. Required to stay overnight at SCCJA when serving as Staff Duty Officer. Must be able to participate in and lead the basic students in physical fitness training.
Patrols and enforces the S.C. motor vehicle traffic laws on streets and highways and enforces other criminal laws of the state. Investigates collisions, enforces motor vehicle laws and assists disabled motorists as needed. Employee will assist in other duties as a uniformed traffic officer at specialized assignments as directed.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
TIME IN GRADE – An applicant must have five (5) years of experience as a South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper and must have held the rank of SCHP Corporal for six months prior to the posted closing date of the vacancy.
EDUCATION – High school diploma or GED equivalency.
PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION – An applicant must have scored 70 or higher on a promotional examination for the vacancy rank within two years of the posted closing date of the vacancy.
PROMOTIONAL INTERVIEW PANEL– An applicant must have successfully completed a promotional interview panel for the vacancy rank within two years of the posted closing date of the vacancy.
DISCIPLINARY ACTION – Any individual who has been suspended for disciplinary reasons and/or involuntarily demoted during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the vacancy or during the subsequent selection process shall be considered ineligible to participate in the promotion process.
EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – An individual who has received an "Unsuccessful Performance" rating on the employee's most recent performance evaluation or has received a “Warning Notice of Substandard Performance” during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the vacancy shall be ineligible to participate in the promotion process.
PROBATIONARY/TRIAL PERIOD – Any individual serving a probationary/trial period shall be ineligible to participate in the promotion process.
RESIDENCY – Selected applicant must comply with the residency guidelines outlined in SCDPS Policy 300.47 (Residency Requirements for Commissioned Law Enforcement Officers) within 4 months of the effective date of the promotion/reassignment. **SCDPS Policy #300.47 IV. Residency Regulations D.2. Personnel assigned to a specialized unit (MAIT, ACERT, etc.) Troopers assigned to a specialized Troop or Unit shall establish a residence within the Troop or Unit of their assigned area of responsibility or, if residing outside of the Troop or Unit of their assigned area of responsibility, at a location that will allow them to respond to the county in which their assigned Troop or Unit office is located within 45 minutes. IV.C. Troop/Region/Division/Unit Commanders are responsible for determining compliance with this policy and shall approve or deny requests to reside outside of the area of assignment.
