United States Air Force Central Command (USAFCENT) is the Air Force Service Component of United States Central Command (USCENTCOM), a joint Department of Defense combatant command responsible for U.S. security interests in 27 nations that stretch from the Horn of Africa through the Persian Gulf region, into Central Asia. This position supports USAFCENT Historical Officer (HO).
The Staff Historian Organizational contract support position supports the team as it collects and organizes USAFCENT (including its assigned and attached subordinate units) historical data from all types of documentation—reports, papers, databases, briefings, emails, spreadsheets, media images, etc. Also capture and organize relevant materials affecting USAFCENT produced by higher headquarters. The Historian Organizational contract support team researches, writes, and edits USAFCENT (including its assigned and attached subordinate units) periodic, at least semi-annually, history reports. Additional tasks and responsibilities required by this position include but are not limited to;
Maintain, organize, and preserve historical files and repositories for USAFCENT and its assigned and attached subordinate units in perpetuity. Store materials in appropriate container or electronic-based media based on classification. Review repository materials for downgrade/declassification. If materials are no longer needed, destroy or mail to appropriate agency.
Conduct, transcribe, edit and derive appropriate classification markings and instructions to research interviews. Research material and apply experience and subject matter expertise to ask appropriate and historically relevant questions of interviewee.
Research and write historical monographs and studies documenting important operations, events, deliberations and decisions on topics which are of key interest to senior leadership, planners, and researchers.
Research and write heritage brochure including graphics and photographs to enhance narrative.
Process requests for new and/or revised emblems from USAFCENT and its assigned and attached subordinate units. Includes working with deployed historians and providing guidance on acceptable draft proposals. Convert officially approved emblems into subdued color schemes using designated software.
Maintain databases used by USAFCENT Historical office (i.e. airmen killed and wounded in action for research and memorialization projects, special orders affecting 9th Air and Space Expeditionary Task Force and its subordinate units to determine eligibility for campaign participation credit, airpower fratricide incidents affecting 9th Air and Space Expeditionary Task Force units.
Research USAFCENT organizational lineage and honors and provide lists of USAF units eligible for applicable campaign and service streamers for past, current and future named operations in USCENTCOM’s geographic area of responsibility.
Prepare, plan, organize, and conduct all facets of in-residence and distance pre-deployment training courses using Instructional System Design. Training is in accordance with AFI 84-102, which requires C-NAF historian to “provide theater-specific training as appropriate.”
Design templates for AFFOR, AOC, and combat and advisory air expeditionary wings periodic history reports (including case file structure) and incorporate changes in applicable guidance including security markings and Air Force Instructions.
Provide assistance in contingency readiness and operations which include writing appropriate annexes and appendices to various plans.
Produce semiannual Historical Activity Report which documents accomplishments and contributions of USAFCENT History Office.
Attend workshops, conferences, and other meetings as required by USAFCENT/HO approximately twice annually.
Two (2) years experience as USAF historian at wing level or higher (can be combined with military/contractor) and USAFCENT experience.
Two (2) years’ experience with Microsoft Office.
